Finally the boat is in de water - Before and After

After almost 10 months since the Bierkaai was lifted out of the water, finally the long awaited day arrived. On the 12th of February it was loaded back in the sea. All went well and there were no problems with any of the valves, all tight.
Even the engine did not have any problems to start again, after being out of use for 10 months.
The result has been excellent and here some before and after photos:

The main difference here is the white mast and and the removal of the "spoiler" aft.


 
The stern has been cleaned up.


No bolts visible holding the additional weight on the keel.

 
The change from steering wheel to tiller. The cockpit floor is a rubber imitation of a teak deck. 
This to hide to hole where the steering post used to be.


Addition of the instruments.

One of the main modifications was the rudder shaft replacement with top and bottom bearings.

First some history about the Peterson 34 pedigree, the “ Ganbare” (good luck in Japanese). “Ganbare”, the famous one tonner of Doug Peterson is an unforgettable milestone of the yachting history : Like “America” and “Dorade”, “Ganbare” of 1973 changed the yacht design, and since than the racing yachts (but also the cruisers) took inspiration from her hull. From GRAZINA to BIERKAAI

When I purchased the Grazina in January 2016, it was laying in Santos, SP.  Here the photos when I went to Santos to look at the boat and have a test sail. As the Peterson 34 is a real pleasure to sail and it very well constructed it was not a difficult to make the final decision. As part of the registration I decided to also change the name of the boat. It had already been changed at least twice, so if it would mean bad luck, something would have happened to it by now. In Brazil, changing the name is actually easier said than done, as the Navy does not allow to have  vessels with the same name. Therefore I ended up choosing a name which I knew for sure no vessel in Brazil would have, “Bierkaai”. What does the name “Bierkaai” mean and what does it stand for. It happens to be that my surname in Dutch means “brewer”, like the one making beer. There is a Dutch proverb  ” fighting against de bierkaai” which means you are setting yourself up

Rudder - the final part, tiller installation

The end of the year the project has been slower. The end of January I took ten 10 days of in order to be able to complete the final parts. One of the critical details was the installation of the new tiller head. The original one was actually only made for the emergency tiller and was very weak. The thickness of the SS was very thin and only the side plates were passing the forces to the shaft. The differences with the new tiller head is clear. Also the end of the tiller had to be made wider.    This is how it looks installed.   Just to get an impression of how it will look with the tiller installed (which still had to receive the last varnish coating).
